Structural Steel Draftsman 

 

Job purpose 

We are offering a great opportunity for an experienced and detail-oriented Intermediate or Senior Steel Detailer to join our growing detailing team. In this role, you will provide quality assurance oversight to ensure all structural construction and as-built drawings meet client Drawing Standards, CISC requirements, and applicable building codes.  

 

Duties and responsibilities 

Reporting to the Chief Draftsman, the Steel Detailer will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing and interpreting contract drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation to perform accurate structural modeling and detailing using Tekla Software

  • Ensuring full compliance with design drawings, CISC standards, and applicable building codes

  • Creating shop drawings for approval and fabrication using Tekla Structures (3D modeling and drafting)

  • Preparing erection drawings for the installation of structural and miscellaneous steel

  • Checking shop drawings to ensure alignment with project scope, client specifications, and regulatory requirements

  • Preparing and managing RFI’s, IFA, and IFC drawing packages, including CNC files and project-specific reports

  • Supporting and mentoring junior detailers (senior-level role)

Skills and Qualifications

Mandatory Experience & Qualifications

  • 2–5+ years of structural steel detailing experience using Tekla Structures

  • High level of knowledge of industry-standard steel detailing practices

  • Strong understanding of structural steel and miscellaneous metals detailing

  • Proficiency with Bluebeam, and MS Office software

  • Proven attention to detail with demonstrated experience in miscellaneous steel detailing

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment

  • Strong time-management skills with the ability to meet project deadlines

  • Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills

Ironworker

 

Job purpose

Ironworkers fabricate, construct and connect structural steel buildings and miscellaneous steel works. They erect structural steel components on both new projects and sometimes perform reconstructive and reinforcing works on existing structures. You are an Ironworker with experience to support us on commercial and industrial projects. You will be an integral part of the GFL team working on multiple active construction projects, as part of our Field Team. This is a full-time position, reporting to GFL project Field Foremen, with the majority of projects located in and around the City of Calgary.

 

Duties and responsibilities'

  • Read erection drawings/ blueprints and specifications to lay out the work

  • Must know crane signals

  • Utilizing Aerial work platforms

  • Install other structural miscellaneous metalwork such as rails, stairs, handrails, roof supports, ladders, and platforms.

  • Ensures the safety of the crew, equipment, and environment

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Require to be a registered apprentice in Ironworker or Welder

  • Current and valid training and certification in AWP operation

  • Current and valid training and certification in Fall Protection

  • All Field Employees to have Basic Ironworker Tools

  • Valid and current CWB certification is an asset 

  • Prefer a Journeyperson Ironworker certification and/or Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman with a recognized provincial training authority
